本門大事記
In Nichiren Shoshu, we can make progress and deepen our faith when we visit our local temple and attend ceremonies. During the ceremonies, we listen to the priest's sermon, share encouraging experiences with our fellow members, and carry out various activities in faith and practice.
Nichiren Daishonin stated,
"Those resolved to seek the Way should all gather and listen to the contents of this letter."
(Gosho, p.484)
He also stated, "The long journey reveals the depth of one's faith."
(Gosho, p.689)
Ceremonies conducted at local temples express and reveal various profound aspects and concepts of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism. By participating, we are deeply absorbing their influences.
本門大事記
Kosen-Rufu Shodaikai
The Kosen-rufu Ceremony is conducted on every
first Sunday of the month. On this day, we chant one hour of Daimoku (chanting Nam-Myo-Ho-Renge-Kyo) together to the Gohonzon for the true happiness of all people and make a determination to achieve a truly peaceful society.
Oko Ceremony
The Oko Ceremony is conducted on every second Sunday of the month. The ceremony begins with kenzen (traditional food) offering and is then followed by the recitation of the Lotus Sutra. After Daimoku and silent prayers, our Chief Priest gives a lecture on the teaching of Daishonin. The spirit of the Oko Ceremony is acknowledging the benefits one has received and repaying the debt of gratitude to the Gohonzon. It is the most important ceremony for us attend during the month.
Okyobi (Group Memorial) Ceremony
The Okyobi Ceremony is conducted on every third Sunday of the month. During this ceremony, together with the priest, we recite the sutra, offer Toba (memorial) Tablets and offer prayers to the Gohonzon for the happiness and enlightenment of the deceased. For group memorial Toba request, please submit Toba request form at least one week in advance.

The Gojukai Ceremony
the ceremony to receive the precept of Nichiren Shoshu. Those who determine to start their faith and practice receive this ceremony from a Nichiren Shoshu priest.
The Gohonzon Bestowal Ceremony
the ceremony to receive the Gohonzon. When a believer has learned how to recite the sutra and has prepared an altar in their home and is prepared to invite the enlightened life of Buddha into their home, they may request this ceremony from the Myoshoji Chief Priest.
The Individual Memorial Service
the memorial service to honor an individual deceased family member. Nichiren Shoshu practitioners make a request for a memorial service to the temple. It is usually arranged on the anniversary date of the deceased.
The Coming of Age Ceremony
the ceremony to receive prayers of bright futures for young believers who have turned twenty. During the ceremony, we recite the sutra, and the priest places the Joju-Gohonzon on the heads of the young adults to receive prayers and to encourage them to face future challenges with unwavering faith and wisdom as they embark on a new stage of life. Myoshoji Temple holds this ceremony in January.
